Colette's earlier post about TAFAP *sporfle* got me thinking. While I don't condone piracy, I'm not too comfortable with trying to stifle it via lawsuits and C&D letters either. So, how can we support the anime industry without resorting to draconian measures? Let's wage a culture war!
Japanator readers, I'm challenging each and every one of you to stop pirating anime. Of course, downloading fansubs for stuff that hasn't been released in the US (or is out of print) is cool. After all, how else could we watch Macross Frontier? What you should NOT do, however, is pirate anything that has been licensed in English and can be bought on disc or streamed for free. Instead, save up your money and buy the DVDs and blurays... or if you're short on cash, head on over to Hulu, FUNimation and Crunchyroll to watch the legal streams. In other words, do everything in your power to support the anime industry so that they can stay in business.
Don't stop there, though! Every time you buy or watch anime legally, tell us about it! Tweet your industry-supporting activities with the topic #notapirate. Let's fill up Twitter with posts like "Just watched Shippuden on CR #notapirate" and "Bought GITS boxset at Fry's #notapirate". Challenge your friends and family to do the same. By doing this, we can let the fandom know that we are committed to taking a stand against piracy without resorting to litigation. Let's tell the world that we are nonpirates!
*cue inspirational music and applause*
Anyhoo, that's my idea. I'd love to hear your opinions on it. In the meantime, I'm going to go watch episode 2 of So Ra No Wo To on Crunchyroll.
