I love watching general news reports of parts of Japanese culture that are familiar to the otaku. The reason why is because while it's directed at people who know nothing about it, there's something kind of hilarious about the tone. It's always inevitable that the reporter will say something to make us chuckle wisely, saying smugly to ourselves that they have no idea what they're talking about.
The 60 Minutes report on Yakuza is kind of like that, but nowhere near as misinformed as some shows of this type can be. Even more interesting are the comments, which range from users who are learning about Yakuza for the first time to people who are obviously well informed and throwing much more detailed opinions out there. Anyway, even if you don't know a damn thing about Japan, now you know why that tattoo sleeve on your left arm earns you a funny look when you hang out waiting for the shinkansen.
I remember when this controversy was all over the Los Angeles papers...
