Japan, help me out here. I'm a little confused.

So on March 26th, you've got this DVD coming out featuring 11 up-and-coming actresses and gravure idols crying. That's it. The girls are crying for a number of reasons (provided after the jump), and it's not like I can do anything about it. Am I supposed to comfort them? Laugh at their situation? Furiously masturbate?

I enjoyed A Japanese Woman Fries An Egg And Asks You About Your Day, but the purpose of that DVD was a bit more straightforward.

In this DVD, you've got everything from a girl crying because her manager scolds her to a girl crying because her friend with breast cancer is getting married. This may just be me, but I'm not the type to just freeze up when a girl starts crying in front of me. I can judge the reason behind their tears and comfort appropriately.

So, I suppose the DVD is for all those who don't really know what it's like when a girl cries, and is supposed to be a training DVD to familiarize yourself with the fairer sex? Well, you may as well just slot it next to your porn DVDs to complete your "training series" on the habits of women.

According to the folks at Gigazine, here are the 11 girls and their scenes:
-Marika Minami "A crying girl in Tennouzu" for being scolded by her manager.
-Yuko Narita "A crying girl in Koenji" for being interrupted while playing Pachinko
-Mai Fukuda "A girl crying in Shinjyuku" for feeling lonely in the city
-Risa Yamada "A crying girl in Koenji" for breaking up and reinstating with a boyfriend
-Nana Ozaki "A crying girl in Akasaka" for being harassed by paparazzi
-Momo Shirakawa "A crying girl in Ikebukuro" for being moved by love for all mankind
- Kanami Okamoto "A crying girl in Omotesando" for being taken irritating photos
-Marika Sono "A crying girl in Shibuya" after a matchmaking party
-Shiho Watanabe "A crying girl in Odaiba" for saying good-bye to her boyfriend
-Yuka Motohashi "A crying girl in Asakusa" to know her breast cancer friend marrying
-Reiko Aoyama "A crying girl in Nishiazabu" knowing the real dirt on show business

Though I imagine context means slightly more than the action, but what do I know.

Would this be marketed towards people who enjoy moe? Do fans of this kind of stuff have an overwhleming need to say "AWWWW!" and feel like they want to comfort someone in awkward situations? Is it a cultural desire to be nurtuing? I understand that feeling, it's the same thing i feel when Pikachu cries when Ash dies in the first Pokemon movie (SPOILER!), but do i want to devote my entire anime-watching "career" to it? Do i want to watch a video of girls crying so i can experience this melancholy nurturing feeling over and over? God, no.

It took me a long time to understand why so many people thought some forms of Japanese entertainment were so weird or disturbing, but lately i've felt it myself with some things. I find myself empathizing less and less, and having a harder time understanding why some poeple enjoy certain things. I suppose there ARE some things that are just too weird for me.

I've had enough with my girlfriend crying all day. At least I can solve that buy hitting her. Now it's on dvd? Why?

I should have laughed so hard at that comment. But then I picture someone hitting their girlfriend and screaming "SHUT YOUR WHORE MOUTH" and broke down.

Fuckin' creepy. It's not like an ironic, schadenfreude thing either. It's a DVD of crying. Still no real human interaction going on.

...Well, I suppose the human population is too big, and Japan's going to help out by being the first country to commit its own genocide by not reproducing anymore. So, um, thanks?
