Windows 7's OS-tan clearly wants to bankrupt me photo

In case you didn't know yet, Microsoft has just thrown the latest punch in the ongoing OS war: Windows 7. Debuting just this week, the PC giant has placed incredible amount of marketing weight into pushing the new system, especially after the PR debacle that was Windows Vista.

A key component of the 'soft's strategy to capture Glorious Nippon was the first-ever officially sanctioned "OS-tan" mascot, Nanami Madobe, voiced by famous seiyuu Nana Mizuki. Buyers of the Windows 7 Ultimate Edition would receive a custom Windows theme featuring Microsoft's moe mistress.

Thankfully, intrepid PC otaku have already leaked the theme into the wild, and its official wallpapers are gracing the desktops of non-Windows 7-owners everywhere. One of those wallpapers, includes a lineup of "recommended PC hardware" to help Nanami-tan work at her best. Among the components are Solid State Drives for booting up, TV tuner cards to use 7's DVR capabilities, multi-core CPUs, high-end Direct3D 11 video cards, and multi-touch monitors.

As I've been in the market for a new PC I did some research and boy, Nanami-tan is a lady of expensive tastes. But she's...so cute...must...resist...bankrupting myself!

I just installed the theme to try it out. It makes cute little noises with everything you do. Minimize a window? "Pin-po!" Start a program? "Ta-da!" Fun at first, but then I played Left 4 Dead, and after getting pounced by a hunter I heard, "Ta-da!" So it gets a bit annoying eventually.

Pretty cool to see an officially sanctioned OS-tan though. My favorite is maximizing a window: "Piroring!"

All I know is it runs even faster than XP does on the same hardware (so needless to say it's about a billion times better than Vista, and slightly better than XP).

I've always dreamed of having an OS that'd have as awesome customizations as this....I have to say I'm impressed, Microsoft.

We in the Ubuntu community will fight this moeness with a 2 second shutdown (try doing that with Windows, or would you rather have your OS whine about how impossible that is).

@Rewarp: aaaaannd done... well... almost. Mine's about 3 and half seconds. If you care that much about the other 1.5, go wine to your mom to buy you a solid state drive. More importantly, can your Ubuntu boot from bios to workable OS (meaning all features and not waiting for the system to catch up and you can run a program without waiting) in 17 seconds? Yeah Ubuntu can boot faster by cutting down the services and such, but that's not really the same thing now is it?

Other things Windows 7 can do that Ubuntu can't, PLAY GAMES. Sure, WINE works fine to a point, but you can't play crysis on it and to get something like TF2 working you pretty much have to follow a complicated online walkthrough.

Also, if you really wanted to make a counter argument, there is an Ubuntu-tan out there... even if she isn't officially sanctioned by Linus Torvalds.

Thanks for the extra info. I am not a gamer, so I guess that the Crysis argument is irrelevant to me.

By catching up and running a program, I would gather you would still need to wait for your anti-virus program to load right? Then there will be the scan weekly, defrag monthly schedule. And on an SSD, it takes 5 seconds to boot up.

So perhaps a faster boot time is the wrong argument to give, therefore I invoke, yes, the security argument.

And nearly all Ubuntu software is free. From OpenOffice to the Gimp (which you can get for Windows as well, but then, you might as well join me on Ubuntu and save yourself from the empire).

But I digress. Because whatever speed Windows 7 is at now, Ubuntu's next LTS version will aim for a boot-up speed so fast (10 seconds), that I don't even have to care anymore about boot-ups.

I have this theme on my W7 powered comp... It's simultaneously cute and fucking annoying at the same time.

I think this sort of community-embracing risky marketing technique is always a good thing. It's kinda depressing that most popular software do not have mascots like these (although not having a mascot is better than having Clippy). Mascots in general are seeing a decline in the largest household-name companies, I think, except for insurance companies or anything food-related.

Although being labeled as a perverted doctor is not something Symantec would want to crow about.

Not that i intend to feed the trolls, but it's worth noting that before this latest Patch Tuesday, the win7 install I'm on right now had been up and running for six weeks -- ever since I originally installed it. It's stable as hell, and I rarely need to reboot, so boot time is pretty much irrelevant.

And by mainstream, you mean software that needs some sort of monetary exchange I presume. 25% of the satisfaction of owning a machine running on Ubuntu for me comes from not needing to pay for anything extra, legally.

The only thing I envy about Windows 7 is Nanami Madobe, honest!
