Score one for technology. The Osaka High Court handed down a verdict of not guilty to Isamu Kaneko, the developer behind Japan's popular P2P program Winny.
Back when he was charged in 2006 for developing a program that he knew would be used for illegal file sharing, Kaneko pleaded not guilty, saying that it would hold up technological development for programmers to be held responsible for copyright infringement.
He was charged with a 1.5 million yen fine, instead of the 1-year jail term prosecutors were calling for, according to AFP. Thankfully, the court's ruling showed that while that may have been the general use for the program, Kaneko had not encouraged people to use it in such a manner.
So, I offer my congratulations to Mr. Kaneko. Now you can breathe easy!
