After meeting an untimely end that so many print publications seem to be facing these days, Yen Plus has now relaunched online. To celebrate the new format choice, publisher Yen Press is offering free access to the August issue until September 10. All you have to do is head to the new website and sign up, and you'll be good to go! If you like what you see, subscriptions are only $2.99 per month.
On the first Tuesday of every month, a new issue will go up and the oldest issue will be taken down. Subscribers will have access to the two most recent issue. The new Yen Plus will feature manga such as Maximum Ride, Daniel X, Nightschool, and Time and Again. Curiously absent are any mention of popular titles Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni and Soul Eater. I wonder if Square-Enix's new digital manga store has anything to do with that.
It will be interesting to see whether Yen Plus thrives now that it's online. I've traditionally avoided scanlations because I don't like reading them on a screen, so I'm inclined to continue purchasing hard copies of any manga I read even if there are legal digital copies. For me, the real killer is the lack of archives of past issues, which mean I'd have to buy the physical releases anyway if I wanted to reread them. Are you more interested in subscribing to a virtual manga anthology than I am?
