I knew The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was descended from a novel, written sometime far back in the title's history. Yet, once I actually bothered to look up information about the book, I found out that it's already been adapted into two movies, a drama, and a TV film, not to mention the recent anime film and manga adaptation.
The wild success of the anime was probably the catalyst to produce another film based on the book. According to Canned Dogs, they're currently looking for extras for the film, although there's no word on the production staff of it. The film is going to be set in 1974, so they'll be going back to the original novel for all this.
Reading about all this makes me desperate to read a copy of the book. This, along with Sky Crawlers have hit the top of my list, because the stories seem so sad and beautiful, and I'm sure that reading it would show that beauty as well. Now I'm wondering if Vertical or one of the other publishers that handles books regularly would go ahead and translate either of these titles.
