The Ys series is well loved here at the Japanator offices. One look at our reviews for the PSP ports of earlier games should tell you everything you need to know.
Ys Origin takes place hundreds of years before the original game and follows the stories of three different main characters who all bring a unique style of gameplay to the table. You have an Adol-like sword wielder, a magic user that almost plays like a shoot-em-up and a third character who I won't spoil.
Origin is arguably one of the most story rich games in the franchise, second only to Ys 7. From what I've read and gathered from hardcore Ys fans, it's all quite interesting well written. XSEED Games once again purchased the rights to the initial fan translation and cleaned it up a bit. Being a prequel, the game doesn't require any prior knowledge of the other games, meaning new people can jump right in.
Ys Origin is available on Steam for $19.99 with true widescreen support, achievements and everything else one might expect from a modern Steam game.
If you're still on the fence, check back early next week when my review goes live. I'll divulge all the juicy info.
