Well, the hopeful rumor of Zac Efron's appearance in the upcoming Full Metal Panic movie has been busted, at least for now. ANN picked up word that while Efron did have a meeting that has to do with Mandalay Picture's optioning of the work, he said it's more likely than not going to happen.
Efron has been looking to move away from more high school-based roles, having had his fill of it with High School Musical and 17 Again. I can understand the undesirability of something like Full Metal Panic because of its situation, although I think he'd be pretty good in the role.
If you're amused by his appearance on the recent episode of Saturday Night Live, go check out more clips of him over on their Hulu page, where he does a pretty good job.

Zac Efron was probably the only choice to make Sousuke work even remotely.
(Keep in mind, it's still going to be the next Evolution of anime-based Hollywood cinema (see what I did there?), so whoever they pick will flop all over the role like a fish in ziploc bag)
Zac Efron isn't amazing, but what other "teen/looks like a teen" actor could pull it off? Ah well, maybe this is the FMP movie's chance to prove itself to be more than just another Hollywood failure.
Now the question is who else could be in the movie?
