So I'm back. This time, Zetsubou-sensei DVD cover. Hooray. :D
This is my first fleshed-out idea for a SZS dvd cover. First season, first disk, first introduction to the series. There are two very prevalent design decisions that continue throughout SZS: the ornate patterned title panels with silhouetted characters, and the brightly colored close ups of characters during conversations or points in the story. I went through the colored slides style first, attempting to realize the DVD cover that way, however I found that many of the designs ended up being stale or simply those colored slides with the title slapped on it somewhere. So I decided to go another direction, this time in the style of the title panels, seen at the beginning of each "chapter."

I feel this turned out much better. I also chose to forgo horizontal text in favor of vertical text. I first saw the Gurren Lagann DVDs use a similar style and it worked well. As such, I thought I'd at least test it out. Then while doing so I realized that this could also successfully evoke the feel of the original vertical logotype. Hopefully it communicates that.
Some things I'm not sure of: are the silhouetted characters distinctive enough? I of course recognize them quickly, but will someone who's never seen the anime see the shapes of people easily?
Comment away. :D
Also, been reading SZS vol 3, Bakuman, and Soul Eater. Awesome stuff from all. Not sure where Bakuman is headed, but it still has my interest.
