3DS to get Nintendo Network IDs this December

Oh hey, Miiverse. You too?

The 3DS is a wonderful little handheld, but with Nintendo showing more of an interest in digital distribution, it was becoming increasingly worrisome that Nintendo Network IDs had not been introduced. This isn't because of the annoyances that come with not wanting to memorise a twelve-digit number, but rather that the chances of something bad happening to your 3DS are only going to increase with time.

Wait, what do Nintendo Network IDs have to do with something happening to your 3DS? Because of a lack of account system, you digital purchases are tied to that console. If something happens to that console, that's your copy of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies out the window, unless you choose to repurchase it. Yes, this also includes all of your dirty Swapnote pictures that you drew before that service was temporarily stopped.

Now, let me clarify: Nintendo has not confirmed that your 3DS digital purchases will now be tied to a Nintendo Network ID come December when the patch is released. However, it seems like an odd move to introduce a new system without that feature - just don't hold your breath over it. We'll see in due time.

Joining the IDs in the patch is the introduction of Miiverse for 3DS, which is great news for all budding artists and owners of Funky Barn. Ah, who am I kidding? Miiverse is perhaps the greatest thing about the Wii U right now, as sharing screenshots, doodles and notes with strangers over the Internet actually isn't as terrible as it seems. Just think about how awesome the community for Pokemon X/Y will be when that is up and running!

Better late than never, Nintendo. This update is long overdue, but I'd be kidding if I said that I wasn't a little bit excited about it.
