4Kids loses money; blind, deaf and TVless fans everywhere are shocked

That's right: ANN reports that our favorite butcher of such fan favorites as Yu-Gi-Oh! (or so I'm told) and One Piece has posted a loss of 28% for the second quarter of 2007, which means it only made 12 million bucks, as opposed to over 16 million the same time last year, losing a total almost $5 million. 2006's first half saw them, y'know, making money, so those of us who think of $10,000 or more as abundant wealth should keep in mind the words of this guy who cares more about money than cartoons:

The Motley Fool stock analyst Steven Mallas, who also reported on 4Kids' first-quarter financials earlier in the year, calls this quarter's results "forgettable." He is particularly concerned that much of 4Kids' potential success is tied to its ability to tap into particular trends or "hot properties" at very specific times. Mallas also notes the high amounts of cash the company is using to finance ongoing operations. Overall, he recommends that investors who are looking into companies that focus on the children's entertainment market turn their attention to Mattel or Hasbro instead.

Burn! That'll teach them to generally displease people with their attempts at family-friendly programming.
