A Daily Dose of Music: Especia

Cuts, cuts, and more cuts.

If you haven't noticed, the 80's is back in full swing in Japan -- whether the artists can effectively emulate the era or not. One pop group that is embracing the blown-out campiness of the era is Especia, as evidenced in this PV for No1 Sweeper.

The video opens in an odd way, and only gets crazier the longer you watch; it's damn near hypnotic. It harkens back to MTV programming of the 80's: Overproduced, nonsensical, and deliciously lo-fi. Old synth sets that haven't been touched in decades hum the back chorus and the wonderfully dated drums give off its signature artificial echo.

I can't help but find this release incredibly endearing. The song and video are unapologetically kitschy, but in a way that makes you feel someone talented and informed is at the helm of the production. This is a great song to add a little pep to whatever you're doing.
