A night at Pacific Media Expo 2010

For some of you lucky enough to attend, last weekend marked the seventh annual Pacific Media Expo. Seeing as we haven't attended very many conventions this year, I decided to drop in for a day and checked it out. While they aren't as large as Anime Expo or Otakon in terms of attendance, everyone who attended seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Rather than focusing on the traditional approach to anime conventions, this expo focuses on all aspects of pop culture from around Pacific Rim. events included anime, cinema and drama viewings, concerts, a martial arts tournament, guests, and more. While some of that seems like the standard fare these days, what probably interested us most was their attention to the J-Fashion scene.

Personally, I wasn't really aware of PMX as being a very large event for the EGL community, but then again I haven't really followed that sub-culture as closely as I could have. Needless to say, I was impressed with everything they had to offer. In addition to several dedicated rooms for lolita related clothing and accessories, they hosted a fashion show and festival.

On Saturday evening, we attended their Starlight Fashion Festival. This offered attendees the opportunity to interact with members of the EGL community in a unique setting, and replaced the annual tea party event which to this point had been exclusively for members of that community. It was sponsored by a host of store and designer labels like Baby the Stars Shine Bright, Alice and the Pirates, Innocent World, and more.

It required an additional $10 fee to get in, but once inside, you were allowed to take pictures, and wander the floor to mingle with other attendees. They also had festival games which allowed you to try your hand at winning one of the many prizes -- $5000 worth, according to their staff. A few of the Japanese designers were also there but photos of them, along with the games required you to purchase tickets which were being sold for $1 a piece. I didn't count, but I imagine there had to have been at least 75 lolitas in the room at one point.

I'll be posting some galleries through out the next few days. I hope you guys enjoy them all.
