Ace Combat Infinity gets cooperative in its new trailer

The free fighter sim drops some famous names

Just in case you've forgotten about it, Ace Combat is back! Sort of. Namco Bandai have just released the latest trailer for Ace Combat Infinity, a downloadable, free-to-play PlayStation 3 incarnation of the famous fighter jet franchise.

The trailer and some new screenshots in the gallery cover what looks like the game's touted "competitive cooperative" multiplayer mode, pitting teams of players against a series of escalating threats, then comparing scores at the end to decide which team performed best. The real stinger here seems to be the surprise appearance of a mega-boss, code-named "Moby Dick", which looks a lot like the flying fortress enemy from Ace Combat 6.

Few details have been given about how exactly Namco Bandai plans to make money off of Ace Combat Infinity. The company's been experimenting lately in the free-to-play space, with F2P versions of Tekken, Gundam, Ridge Racer, and other well-regarded brands. And the reactions have been as varied as the games themselves. As someone who has no particular opposition to F2P design, I'm hoping the company can pull it off, while still pushing the right buttons to bring in Ace Combat fans pining for the pre-Assault Horizon days.
