American poster for Miyazaki's The Wind Rises

Will the film make it into the running for an Oscar?

Here's your first look at the North American poster for The Wind Rises from Disney. Hayao Miyazaki's (possible) swan song will be arriving on our shores on February 21st, but it will also have an Oscar-qualifying run this weekend into next week (in certain theaters in New York and Los Angeles). It seems Disney was a bit reluctant to release the somewhat controversial film under their banner, so it'll instead be confined to the Touchstone Pictures label. It's still owned by Disney, so it makes no real difference, but I still find it mildly disappointing how reticent they are about what could be Miyazaki's final film.

The director has come back from retirement several times in his career, so I don't want to cast doom and gloom over this party. But it's a very real possibility that this could be his final piece, so it'd be nice if it got a little recognition. Thankfully, it has been submitted for the animated film category of the Oscars, so we could see it getting nominated. Several other anime films are in the list too, such as A Letter to Momo and Madoka Magica The Movie -Rebellion-. If you think Madoka will actually get nominated though, I have bad news for you...
