Anime Expo, Otakon continue to dominate biggest cons

2013 sees Anime Matsuri in the top 10

Now that 2013 is over and done with, we can take a look at how all the cons stacked up last year. AnimeCons has all the numbers that each event self-reported, and that's the best metric we have to go on. Some of the cons are not entirely accurate, as they might vary between reporting based on ticket sales, or how many people entered that day (which counts multiple entries), and can balloon numbers.

Let's take a look at the list and discuss below:

  1. Anime Expo - 61,000 estimated total attendance
  2. Otakon - 34,892 paid attendees
  3. Anime Central - 28,692 total attendance
  4. Anime North - 23,952 paid attendees
  5. FanimeCon - 23,430 paid attendees
  6. A-Kon - 22,366 total attendance
  7. Anime Boston - 21,200 paid attendance
  8. Sakura-Con - 21,000 estimated paid attendance
  9. Anime Weekend Atlanta - 18,363 total attendance
  10. Anime Matsuri - 14,989 total attendance

Compared to 2012, we've only got Anime Matsuri as a new entrant into the top 10, while the shows in the lower half (#5 and below) shuffled around some. Most of the shows saw modest growth, with somewhere around 5-10% increase in attendance -- which doesn't surprise me for the state of the anime and manga market. Anime Expo's numbers are on the high side of estimated attendance, likely because of its four-day nature and a lot of in-and-out on their turnstiles.

It's good to see the cons growing some, but it's worth noting that you should always take a look in your area for some of the smaller cons and give them support. You never know when AnimeFargo or Anime Oasis might hit it big in the future!
