Anime-style robot on science journal causes rage

Apparently, cute robo-maids aren't in vogue

When you think of robotics, what's the first thing to come to mind? For me, I think of the killing machines from the Terminator series. For most others that aren't hellbent on seeing a robot apocalypse, they might think of cute gynoids like Chii. Well, some people definitely aren't fond of that little stereotype, as the editors of the Journal of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence is discovering.

On the cover of the January 2014 issue of the robotics journal is a serene gynoid reading a book whilst in the act of cleaning a room. Pretty innocuous in my opinion. However, the cover was almost immediately criticized on Twitter for "representing a lack of sensitivity to the international issue of gender issues." The commenter, a contemporary artist named Sputniko!, is also an assistant professor at the MIT Media Lab.

I don't know, to me, this seems like a non-issue. It was voted on by the members of the JSAI and was also illustrated by a female artist. Not only that, but there's nothing offensive here. I'm going to chalk this to over sensitivity. I mean, I think it's a tasteful piece and quite charming to boot. You can check it out in the gallery.

What do you think?

Pedro Cortes has been known to swoon at the sight of a robot. This is understandable, as robots are pretty awesome. more + disclosures
