Annotated Anime: Galilei Donna Ep. 2

Da Galilei Code TV

Last week's Galilei Donna was all over the place. It intrigued but didn't offer much in terms of explanation. This week's Galilei Donna still doesn't quite offer much in terms of explanation, but at least it wraps up the pilot story arc.

If we didn't know any better, the ending visuals would indicate that our three sisters will go on an adventure, maybe plus one other girl. This week, we find out the mysterious woman will join the Galilei Donna as their fourth, and the quest they're on. It's a big deal.

If you are a fan of movies like National Treasure or Da Vinci Code, you might suddenly "get" Galilei Donna. The somewhat-mysterious woman turns out to be Hazuki's savior during that bathroom struggle, the girl with the unreal curls. It happens that Anna is a big history nerd, and she's got all the obscure details on Galileo and how he might be hiding some ultimate treasure, leaving encrypted clues for his decedents.

As an aside, the animation still is pretty spiffy in Galilei Donna's second episode. It's really notable as every time someone opens their mouth, white puffs of smoke come out as if it were a cold winter day. Or in this case, the middle of an ice age where most of the episode takes place outdoors. It's a neat trick that you really don't see much in anime, on a scale like this.

I'm not sure if this is a dig on Italians cops, or a dig on cops in general, but in a somewhat-predicted way, the cops who are suppose to protect the Ferrari family are suddenly in on the whole Galileo's Inheritance conspiracy too. At gunpoint, the detective who was suppose to handle the simultaneous kidnapping attempts apprehends the family, save Hozuki who got away by luck. It's probably with equal shock that just before the betrayal, Hozuki reveals that she completed the goldfish airship all by herself, using some secret family blueprint, and took just three years. How old was Hozuki three years ago? Why does it have missiles? Whatever.

The second half of the Galilei Donna this week turns into a weird jailbreak. Actually, it's just Anna giving Hozuki a pep talk and then Hozuki breaking into the jail to rescue her family using a goldfish-themed power suit. The equally inept cops do nothing but to slow it down, while Hozuki tries her best to not kill any of them. Probably the more important thing about that segment is revealing the "bad guys" in the form of Mom's employer. It seems that some shadowy, large corporation is after the treasure that none of the Ferraris know about. Anyway, the robotic antics turned out okay, and somehow the three girls manage to escape after their parents' sacrifices.

Maybe this series will flow better when watched all together, but episode 2 of Galilei Donna is also a mess like the first one. Now knowing the adventure angle to the show, maybe it will make more sense. At the same time, the series seems to have a hard time figuring out if it's meant to be a serious matter or a light-hearted romp, as all these super-serious events and situations keep happening in a jarringly light-hearted way.

You sure are the only one with balls

Dad's noble deed and Mom's predicament are drastic and puts down the almost-too-positive tone that the rescue has. Yes, they're now on the quest to discover the treasure that nearly killed the lot of them, and maybe that's for the best rather than to dwell on the bloody pool Mom lies in or how that RPG nailed Dad in the back. Meanwhile, I'll just stare into the twin abysses that lie within Anna Hendrix's curls. Because it looks like bread?
