Annotated Anime: Galilei Donna Ep. 7

Fishing for goldfish in the Caspian

Hazuki, Kazuki, Hozuki, and Anna find themselves again cornered by Aldi Moon's faithful hunting dog, Roberto. This time they were blasted out from under the sea while en route to the next moon sketch. It's about time for Galilei Donna to take things into the next chapter as our lucky girls finally run out of luck.

In some ways, for an episode where our protagonists once again brave the brink of death, there wasn't a lot of tension. There was a lot of frustration and that's expected, but it all turns around in the same half-baked sort of way that the viewer, by now, is either accepting or mastered dealing with as a part of Galilei Donna's journey. But, there were at least some big questions answered this week. Let's take a look.

For those of us who has kept the thinking cap on while watching this show, that Aldi Moon's interest in the Galileo legacy, or specifically the Galileo Tesoro, should not have come as a surprise. Galilei Donna has been dropping those hints since the start--the energy theft, the abandonment of the rural and the poor as energy becomes scarce and expensive, and that Aldi Moon is trying to establish an energy monopoly-- all points to the energy crisis being the number one problem. That Galileo Tesoro might be some kind of mysterious secret energy source is somewhat expected. The magical goldfish hourglass being the Galileo Tesoro, however, is actually not a sure thing. It is part of the question that is left unanswered after the reveal about the goldfish hourglass; we still don't know what the moon sketches are for. If you think about it, we might have an idea as to what the treasure hunt is about, but we still don't know what exactly Galileo Tesoro is.

AI sings the blues

Roberto obtained the goldfish hourglass, but to the surprise of some--Anna at least--he left all the girls alive. I think Galilei Donna has established enough to show that Roberto is a convincing, matter-of-fact kind of killer who would wipe his tracks by killing people in cold blood. Revealing the relationship between Anna and Roberto is also kind of interesting in the sense that none of the sisters know about it still, so that surprise element is still intact. Hazuki might be suspicious but it's not clear where this will lead, and if the story will spring this plot element on us again. In a way it's almost irritating to see such an obvious plot element left untriggered.

This is sort of weird, but also oddly appropriate--it turns out that Hozuki loves Japan! She loves its culture, language and food. So when she finds out that they're going there next in the treasure hunt, it gets all weird. I wonder how they will be able to handle the language issue, which is something Galilei Donna has smoothly glazed over. I guess the three sisters are primarily Italians, but they've traveled to other parts of Europe where the language is dominantly not Italian.

On the bright side, it's good to see Hozuki continue to be the cool-headed one of the crew. I'm still waiting for her to turn all the way around and unload some martial arts on some bad guys. You can do it!

Speaking of yet-to-be-sprung plot elements, maybe Mom Ferrari will come into play finally. Sylvia looks positively deadpan in this week's Galilei Donna, so anything could be possible when she eventually gets her next scene in the story.
