Annotated Anime: Galilei Donna Ep. 9

A goldfish jumps over Back to the Future

I give a lot of props to anime that can surprise me in a pleasant way. Over the years I've seen a lot of stuff, and it's well-known that a lot of shows stick to the same basic patterns. Galilei Donna seemed to walk that same, beaten path, at least up until now. And now I might have to give it props.

The plot comes to a head as Roberto forces the showdown over Galileo's sketches. The valiant but ultimately ineffective Ganymede gang makes their splash, but none of that changes things as far as Roberto's utter dominance of the situation, given his determination, skills and resources. So what happens next? What will be the equalizer?

Best fish

Galilei Donna, as disappointing as it may have been up to now, is a show that pays attention to details and things are often the way they are for some explicit reason. Now we know why Hozuki keeps her pet goldfish, or why she reads those love letters from her ancient grand-whatever-father the same way Hazuki stares longingly at her broken cell phone. And it's just the story of how a boy meets a girl because the plot had nowhere else to go.

It turns out that the magical sand substance inside Hocchi's goldfish hourglass allows her to travel through time. In the two prior cases when it activated, explosions and the cold air get sucked into the thing, along with a PET bottle and a shoe, and the stuff came out on the other side near where the original Galileo Galilei lives, back in the 16th century. During the aforementioned showdown, stray weapons fire rains down on the three sisters as they escape with little more than the clothes on their backs. The Ganymede team makes for good distraction while Anna stands up to Roberto at the last minute, trying to save the girls' lives. Moments before impact, the goldfish-hourglass-time-machine does its trick, and Hozuki has been transported back to the 16th century.

Don't cry for me, Anna

It's also important to note that Galilei Donna's Galileo is not some pious Catholic kid in a big family, but a single-dwelling young man who was flying on his flying machine, predating history by a few hundred years. I'll give Galilei Donna the benefit of doubt that Hozuki can communicate with Galileo, because it's important to the story and it's fun to watch how Galileo and Hozuki bonds as two smart kids with a rigorous background in the sciences. Of course, Hozuki is totally helping Galileo do some incredible things, because she's from his future. And that's where things can get weird if you think about it too much. Just who are the love poems on those moon sketches for? Who is enjoying it? Yeah, maybe I did pick the right show to review this season after all.

What came first? Fish or Hozuki?

What Galileo does already know is also helpful:the portal that spew Hozuki out from the sky will reappear in about a month after Hozuki landed in Galileo's lap. In the meanwhile they need to rebuild his flying machine that Hozuki wrecked by landing on it, and hope that his theory works (unlikely as it may be). How will Hozuki save her sisters in the future? Will she leave a note so the girls know to wear some bulletproof gear to the exchange? Time will really tell, literally and figuratively, how Galilei Donna wrap this up.
