Annotated Anime: Galilei Donna Episode 10

Galileo x Galilei Donna

The second part of the time travel arc-- where Hozuki romances her ancestor, Galileo-- comes to an end with this week's Galilei Donna. It's hard to say what this adds to the already suspicious set of circumstances surrounding the treasure hunt over Galileo's moon sketches. It's easy to put two and two together and understand the meaning behind Hozuki's favorite love poems, but what does this mean for the rest of us?

In the present day, a few missiles are about to land on the three sisters; I think that's more important. Then again, when you travel through time you are messing with some very potent voodoo, both in terms of the physics and in terms of writing a script for a TV show about time travel. Will we get stuck trying to explain paradoxes away? Or will Galileo actually learn something from Hozuki and go all Doc Brown on us?

A1 sure does great backgrounds

Galileo and Hozuki's plan to get her back up to the sapphire-lightning cloud goes off without a hitch. Oh, by the way, Galileo also happens to apply Cartesian graphing and become the first man to build a self-powered aircraft that is capable of sustained flight-- of course, none of these things would have been invented until something like 50-100 years or more after Galileo's lifetime. Galileo not only sketches the moon from his hand-held, single-lens telescope, but builds his model aircraft like a pro. The final human-size prototype is flawless and works the first time it flew; I suppose we can only have Hozuki to thank.

The weird part isn't so much that Galileo was a hermit that had all these super-advanced scientific insights about the world, or that Galilei Donna's script had no choice but to have him speak in a way that explains these things coming from someone who already know about them, not as someone who are having these novel ideas for the first time in the history of the world. When he developed and confessed special feelings for Hozuki though, it just got weird. Granted, I am in no position to blame him for liking our cute, intelligent, sensitive and plucky protagonist, but not only they are blood-related (albeit very faintly), but she is still only in fifth grade! I guess neither issue was a deal-breaker back in the 1500s.

You said it.

The fact that Hozuki comes from the future, though, does break all kinds of deals. Galileo figures it out--if not by her strange clothing alone, but by the fact that a little girl can understand the bleeding edge of science (even if it's only bleeding edge by 1500s standards.) Meanwhile, the magical glitter inside Hozuki's fish-hourglass seems to be running out; by the time she enters the cloud-portal, the hourglass runs clean. Does this mean Hozuki can't pull off more strange and magical moves? It certainly seems to be the case after Hozuki returns to the present.

Bambino this and that

But I think Galilei Donna is staking all its cache on Galileo. How will Galileo figure Hozuki's problems out? Will he create a device that will help the Gailieo sisters find a new source of energy? I can only hope so, as the sisters return to their ice-aging reality facing the strong likelihood of imminent death-by-missiles. The Black Ganymede guys can only help so much as Interpol finally catches up to the sisters. Perhaps Hozuki and her sisters' trip has come to an end, but will her flight with Galileo continue?
