Annotated Anime: Mekakucity Actors episode 9

0

Who is the real monster?

Family mysteries is a big theme in this episode that delivers the story in the form of a flashback. If you've followed the show up to now and pieced together chunks of the narrative that have been tossed to us off the back of a recklessly driving truck, you know what to expect.

Ayano is given the lead in this episode which was expected, but like the other entries in the series, provides a nice change of pace with a new story with plenty of sockets open for viewers to connect to the existing characters and plot-lines revealed thus far. This flashback goes as far back to when Ayano and her step-siblings were just children, up to the more recent years that tie more closely to the current story.

Here we get the full picture of the family. The professor of Momo, Ene, and Haruka is confirmed to be Ayano's father, who adopts three children under his home: Kido, Kano, and Seto. It would be exceedingly naive to think that it was just coincidence that they were all adopted together, and the show is quick to address it, even though we as viewers are given more than a few hints of that.

There are plenty of heartfelt and fun moments in the show, presenting a happier and simpler time in these characters lives as the three adopted children learn to embrace their differences and learn how to become a family under the loving umbrella of Ayano. It's easy to see why the Mekakushi-dan remember her so fondly.

Curiosity gets the best of Ayano when she enters her father's restricted room and comes across a book that details and prophesizes the existence of the red-eyed children, written by her mother. After a startling revelation, we're thrust back to the present with Kano and Ene, where the show finally reveals the secret he and Ayano shared.

The serpent we see swallowing people and passing on the red-eye powers is suspected to be a dormant being that resides in Ayano's father, unbeknownst to him. To follow on Ayano's suspicions, she persuaded Kano to use his powers to masquerade as her in school, coloring certain scenes and character relations in a very different light.

Aside from the bizarre and ghastly CG opening that rivals the creepiness of Japan's recent humanoid robotic efforts (seriously, I wasn't aware of the uncanny valley of anime until now), this is probably one of my favorite episodes in the series. I'm a sucker for flashback episodes when recognizable characters live their lives out in simpler times and showing the seeds being sown to shape them into the people we know today.

The story is swiftly coming together to give us a glimpse of the puppet master that resided in the shadows the entire time, allowing us viewers to begin making sense of the larger plot, even if a few more gaps appear in the process. It's been a compelling show since the start, and I'm surprisingly not sick of the boundless speculation and mysteries I've been given. As we head deeper into the final quarter, I can only hope that there's a satisfactory finale at the end of all this because this is one of the hardest shows of the season to predict.
