Annotated Anime: Mob Psycho 100 Season 2 Episode 1

Our Favorite Esper Is Back!

If you read my Mob Psycho 100 review from last year, you know that it’s one of my favorite series from 2016. It was really quirky with a great cast of characters, great animation and story—Shigeo and Reigen’s chemistry as student and mentor, respectively, was overall great. Earlier last year, an OVA episode named “The Miraculous Unknown Psychic” was released recapping all the events from the first season narrated by Reigen Arataka in form of him attempting to write a bestselling book.

I usually don’t bother watching previous season recaps, especially if the series is still fresh in my mind but watching this one was enjoyable—it was well executed, and it shows the relationship between Shigeo and Reigen hasn’t changed.

The first episode of Season 2 starts immediately after the recap, covering the Mob's Girlfriend Mini-Arc (Chapter 51 and 52 of the manga). The episode didn’t cover anything too important, but it was a cute slice of life episode. During the episode, Shigeo attempts to do his student council president while at it, also impress his crush Tsubomi but fails miserably—becoming a laughing stock of his school. Due to his failure, he was feeling miserable until a girl named Emi confessed to him.

Unfortunately for Mob, it turned out she only went along as his girlfriend because she lost a bet. Later during the episode, Emi was getting teased by her friends about a manuscript and went as far as tearing it apart. Mob stood up for her and fixed her torn apart manuscript with his Esper powers, ending the mini-arc with Tsubomi looking up stating "that wasn't so bad".

The animation was pretty good too, especially when he used his powers to fix her torn manuscrpt—especially the animation sequence. Next episode is when it's going to get real, so I can't wait.
