Annotated Anime Roundup: Fall 2013 Week 12

But first, a poem

'twas the night before Christmas (eve), and all through J-tor,

Just two recaps were stirring; just a pair, and no more.

For the season was closing, as Fall passes on,

After Final Impressions, poof! A show's gone.

Two titles they were, Kyousougiga, Yowapeda,

Recapped expertly, with a Walkure Romanze header.

"Why Walkure?", you ask? "You missed it this season!"

Indeed I did miss it; IS 2 was the reason.

'twas a reason unworthy, in the cold light of day,

8-Bit dropped the ball hard, in every which way.

An irony, knowing they made Walkure, too.

But it's recap time now, Happy Holidays to you!

Yowapeda Episode 11

Yowapeda woo

The Sohoku upperclassmen hog all the spotlight by not even telling the first-year bikers about a preliminary race for the upcoming Inter-High Championships. Onoda and co. are a little upset to be left out of the loop, but it turns out the seniors had an oh-so-secret plan; they want to hide the existence of their talented crop of new riders by keeping them out of the sight of the talent scouts and reporters for as long as possible. Still, even with only three riders, Sohoku wins the right to represent Chiba in the InterHigh with ease, which kind of surprised me; it's more typical in a show like this for the experienced seniors to desperately need the talented up-and-comers, but not this time around.

This was kind of a blah episode for me, honestly. I appreciate the fact that the upperclassmen aren't pushovers, but it just wasn't much fun to watch. I'm also not sure I really get the need for the "hide the talented freshman from the scouts!" plan. So if word gets out that Sohoku has a bunch of talented freshman, what exactly are the other schools going to do? Tell their riders to bike faster? "Aw man, Sohoku has a really good team this year-- I guess you'll have to bike really fast. Don't go just kind-of-sort-of fast, go really fast!" Maybe I just don't understand the kind of psychological warfare that goes on in the world of competitive cycling? It's very possible.

Best part of the episode by far was the short at the end showing the stoic Imaizumi slowly but surely becoming an otaku. Somewhere, Shinichi from Outbreak Company is laughing over his tea.

Kyousougiga (TV) Episode 10

Koto might not win the award for Japanator’s Best Female Character of 2013, but she definitely deserves a medal for lecturing her dad with pure physical violence. First of all, she comes down with her hammer like there’s no tomorrow. Then she brings out the fists, as she convinces her dad to keep on living. Overall, the entire scene was very fulfilling.

Personally, the best part of Kyousougiga’s finale was seeing the entire family together. In fact, Koto and Yakushimaru fought hard to earn their happy ending when reality was about to be destroyed. By accepting his own powers, Myoe was able to create a series of miracles that brought joy to the people around him. Not only that, Koto’s destructive hammer allowed for the two siblings to enter the realm where their parents were at.

In the end, I couldn't help but to cry when things came to a complete resolution. While Kyousougiga’s ending wasn’t a depressing one, my tears were created from seeing Koto and Yakushimaru reunite with their family after putting an end to all of the dysfunctionalities that were keeping them from being happy. Sure, I could’ve saved my thoughts for my Final Impression piece, but there’s one more episode left before I can give Kyousougiga a proper farewell.
