Annotated Anime: Space Dandy 12

Who's on first?!

Dandy, you just go looking for trouble, don't you? We're almost done with the first season, and you still keep getting everybody into weird situations. Well, I suppose it's a good thing. Because otherwise we would've have a TV show in the first place. Got to keep that comedy ball rolling, eh? So how about a shape-shifting alien episode?

The premise is a bit cliche, much like Space Dandy's other episodes, but as in the past, it's able to do some entertaining stuff with it. Dandy and crew hear from Scarlet about the Chameleonian, an alien no one has been able to catch yet because of its ability to change into any other shape. Since the reward is 100 million woolongs, this send them on a adventure to find one. How, you ask? Dandy simply flies to "a planet that looks like it'll have a Chameleonian on it." Right.

QT discovers a penchant for fishing, and begins a grand tour to catch as many fish as possible while Dandy and Meow just hunt for the alien. Of course, one of the fish happens to be the Chameleonian, but they don't realize it until later. They then stumble into a caper and comedic back-and-forth between the alien, posing as Meow and QT, and eventually Dandy. They end up being ok with both being Dandy, because of course they are.

This was a fun episode mainly because rather than relying on one joke, they kept up a rapid-fire pace of humor, and if one joke didn't work it just hurtled on towards the next. The episode never stayed still and made variety its priority. The Who Wants To Be A Millionaire section was by far the standout bit, mostly due to QT, who stole the show. Is that your final Dandy?!

The animation was solid throughout, lending itself to the comedy by focusing on the physical gags and silly faces. Seriously, this episode was a goldmine for reaction images and gifs. You've got little things that all add up, such as Dandy almost tripping while trying to hunt the alien, the overzealous posturing of fake-Dandy, or the alien in the old man body. It's not high-brow comedy by any means, but the art elevates the jokes and makes them funnier than they would be in any other show.

The final scene was a bit of a non-ending, but given how open-ended Space Dandy has been so far, that's not really an issue. I enjoyed this episode a lot, just because it flowed well and exemplified the Dandy we've come to know and love. Next week's episode looks neat, if only because I want to see how they handle a love interest for QT. Then, we have a short break until Space Dandy returns in July! I'm ready for more.
