Annotated Anime: Space Dandy episode 10

Take that, Endless Eight!

Is there an unwritten rule that shows need to have a time-loop episode? No, don't link me to the TV Tropes page for it. I don't need to see it. I already know what I'll find within that internet-tome. Anyway, enough of me babbling -- how did Space Dandy handle its time-loop tale? Find out below!

It was excellent!

The crew have a convenient break-down and land on Meow's home planet, despite his protest. There, they meet his family, in particular, his father. There's a bit of family drama, mostly on Meow's shoulders. While as a child he aspired to be a metalworker like his father, upon growing up he diverged from that path and opted to explore the galaxy. Coming back to the planet brings up old memories -- particularly because nothing has changed.

A strange beam/force alters the calendar, forcing the team to relive the day over and over. They don't notice anything different though, until the narrator figuratively smacks them and explains what's going on. Once again, the fourth-wall-breaking humor is the best. Now aware of the problem, they go about trying to fix it. And guess who has the perfect tool to peel off the date on the calendar? Meow's dad. Perfect!

It was all orchestrated well, never feeling repetitive or too hokey despite doing an archetypical storyline. The variety within Meow's family and friends was also great -- I especially loved the revelation regard the girl Meow was crushing on near the end. Also, were all the 8s references to what I was assuming? Not sure if that's a coincidence or intentional. However, the minor details about Meow's dad and his job... do you wonder what those parts were for? Hmm, I do wonder...

The animation was also great. Not only did this episode feature some great character animation, we also got some fun sequences, such as when Dandy stole the space car. Despite being a "tropey" episode, there was a lot to love here. The Boobies jokes were also appropriate, given the situation, and added to the story.

Overall, it was a fun episode with tons of references and a great script. Space Dandy has really been on the up-and-up with these last few episodes and seems to have found its stride. Next week also looks interesting, especially given that it'll have some great animators on board (Hiroyuki Okuno and Hisashi Mori), so once again, I find myself looking forward to next week.

Also... a Yahoo Answers joke?!

Now that we've hit 10 episodes, let me throw a question out there: what has been your favorite episode so far?
