Annotated Anime: Space Dandy episode 11

Wait, what?

This week on Space Dandy, something happened. A thing definitely occurred. I'm just not sure exactly what that was. I've got an idea, how about you guys just explain it to me? That'll work, right? This episode featured mind control, strange mathematical sequences, and moe books. I'm sure you can fit the pieces together and figure out it all works.

I've heard a lot of comparisons to Doctor Who. If you're going to make any, please leave now. Thanks.

Nah, I'm kidding. There actually were some odd Who feelings lingering around the edges. This mainly came from the mysterious book Dandy and crew found, which (unbeknownst to them) sends them on a trip around the galaxy. They forget things easily. "Wait, how did we get here? Why are we going here?" Dr. Gel, who originally had the book in his possession, is sent by the book into an obsession with Dandy's supposed "powers." He constantly is writing mathematical equations, attempting to discover the secret behind Dandy (spoiler alert: near the end of the episode, he realizes that the answer is "boobs").

When Dandy, Meow, and QT finally learn the truth, the book reveals that she's been using them all along to escape and see the universe. Sorry for wiping your minds a whole bunch! The assistant paper slip also made me laugh. But perhaps most bizarre was seeing the book blush. Yes, she blushes. This is a new dawn for  "book moe."

The bizarre art style only lent to the odd feeling this whole episode had. The sepia tone on much of it also added to the dream-like state, along with the rough lineart. I'm sure we'll get some complaints about "bad art," but I felt it was a great twist.

Perhaps most striking is just the fact that this episode happened at all! I really appreciate the control each episode director is given over their work, so that they can go as crazy as they'd like. You want to tell a bizarre story about an superpowered book that gains knowledge via other peoples' minds? Go for it! What do you mean that doesn't fit in with Space Dandy?! Everything fits in!

I love experimental, weird TV like this, especially if it's animated. The amount of unique things you can do are essentially limitless. That's why I'm so glad Space Dandy exists, because we get eccentric and curious episodes like this that do uncommon things. Give me as many episodes like this as possible, because I'll eat them up every time!
