Annotated Anime: Space Dandy episode 13

The mid-season finale!

We're halfway through Space Dandy, but now we've got to take a break. Lame! At the very least, we're going out on a bang -- a QT-themed bang! Yup, as you may have gathered from the previews last week, this episode is all about QT and his love for coffee. Man, he sure does love coffee. I'm not missing anything here, right? It's just about coffee?

This might actually be my favorite Space Dandy episode yet. The laser-focus on QT and Ms. Maker was great, basically leaving Dandy and Meow in the dust. In fact, the two probably weren't even on-screen for much more than a minute. Dr. Gel and Bea got more airtime than them! And you know what? That's ok. It worked perfectly.

(Although perhaps that actually just speaks to the fact that Dandy and Meow aren't very well-developed or interesting characters, but I digress. I still like them.)

QT encounters a beautiful coffee maker robot named Maker, and instantly falls in love. He visits the coffee shop every day just to chat with her more, and eventually they go out to see the outside world one evening. However, Maker is later "retired" since she was a robot that began to develop feelings, and was deposited on a trash heap island for robots with emotions. There, QT finds her and discovers she actually had feelings for a cash register. He then throws himself into battle against the robots as they attempt to destroy the local city -- and succeeds in stopping them.

The characterization for QT and Maker worked very well, and I particularly liked the introduction of Mr. Toaster, who lead the robot revolution. Rather than the final well-animated battle being the result of silly antics (like previous Dandy episodes) here it actually meant something, because we knew that QT was fighting for something. That, combined with the excellent use of music, made the final sequence surprisingly moving. Ace job, everyone.

The first half of Space Dandy has been both hit and miss, but I believe in the end it falls more on the side of "hit." The artistic creativity on display has been fantastic to watch, even if the story and humor don't always back it up. I think we'll be looking back fondly on Space Dandy as a whole. But I do have one thing that I think will be fun: episode rankings! Many readers who haven't been watching Space Dandy have been wondering what are the best episodes to watch, so let's go through my picks here!

  1. Even Vacuum Cleaners Fall in Love, Baby (episode 13)
  2. There's Always Tomorrow, Baby (episode 10)
  3. Sometimes You Can't Live with Dying, Baby (episode 4)
  4. A Merry Companion Is a Wagon in Space, Baby (episode 5)
  5. Plants Are Living Things, Too, Baby (episode 9)
  6. The Lonely Pooch Planet, Baby (episode 8)
  7. Nobody Knows the Chameleon Alien, Baby (episode 12)
  8. A Race in Space Is Dangerous, Baby (episode 7)
  9. I'm Never Remembering You, Baby (episode 11)
  10. The Search for the Phantom Space Ramen, Baby (episode 2)
  11. Live with the Flow, Baby (episode 1)
  12. Occasionally Even the Deceiver Is Deceived, Baby (episode 3)
  13. The War of the Undies and Vests, Baby (episode 6)

Well, I'm not 100% positive on that ranking, but as a rough outline of some of the best episodes, those top few are some great entertainment. I'd still recommend watching from episode 1, just to get the introductions down, but you can almost watch them in any order after that... or skip some, if you want. I don't think anyone will be upset if you forget about episode 6.

All in all, I still recommend Space Dandy, and am eagerly awaiting more episode in July. I hope from here on out we get even more impressive and hilarious work. Sound off in the comments on your opinions! Maybe you have your own personal ranking? I'm curious which episode you put at the top. Fire away, baby!
