Annotated Anime: Sword Art Online II episode 2

Don't underestimate Sinon's sniping skills

After going through an exposition-filled episode, you’d think that Sword Art Online II would start Kazuto’s main mission already. Instead, the series chose to introduce the viewers to Sinon, a player who happens to be very experienced in Gun Gale Online. Either way, Sinon was hinted to play an important role in SAO's new season, so there shouldn’t be a problem with seeing this new character in action.

Due to A-1’s decision to focus on Miyuki Sawashiro’s character, I think it’s safe to say that Sword Art Online II will move at a normal pace. Since a good introduction is important for any series, let’s find out if SAO II gets things right with Sinon’s debut.

I'm sorry to say this, but Sword Art Online II loses some points for re-showing episode 1’s final scene during the beginning of the series' second episode. However, that doesn’t mean that A-1 messed up, as they probably felt that it was best to transition an older scene towards the newer one. At least Sinon’s earlier fight showed us that Gun Gale Online’s world contains monsters and bosses as well, since I thought that the game only featured PVP battles.

While the show’s staff chose to zoom in on certain parts of Sinon’s body, I didn’t feel that it ruined Sword Art Online II’s overall quality. Seeing that the lady’s a skilled sniper that can adapt to any situation, I felt that A-1 did a fine job in showing Sinon’s tactical and combat skills in battle to the point where the earlier shots didn't matter. Also, you can’t go wrong with a character that refuses to back down from an impossible battle.

Sinon means serious business

Speaking of fierce players, A-1 did a phenomenal job in animating Sinon’s battle against Behemoth, since we saw the girl perform a mid-air snipe while attempting to dodge her target's bullets. I mean, Sinon only accomplished this feat with only one leg! In other words, the girl's a force to be reckoned with. In fact, Sinon's action scenes and the other shooting sequences made up for the weird the first person shooter-like shots that were shown during the beginning of the battle. That being said, as long as we’re treated to more dynamic battles to balance out the normal shooting scenes, then Sword Art Online II’s fights should continue to be enjoyable.

Despite my minor issues with A-1 reusing a scene from the show’s first episode, I found SAO II’s second episode to be exciting. Considering that Sinon isn’t a pushover in battle, I look forward to seeing what her role in the show’ll be when Kazuto finally logs into GGO. Whether Sinon’ll be Kazuto’s rival or ally will depend on how things will unfold next time. Come to think of it, Sinon would make a great mentor for Kazuto, as she’s already familiar with Gun Gale Online’s mechanics. On top of that, Sinon might become one of Death Gun’s targets later on, so it would make perfect sense for Kazuto to form a party with her.

Sinon gives SAO II a big thumbs up

Since A-1 has proven to us that they won’t rush SAO’s Phantom Bullet Arc, there’s a good chance that the mystery will be worthwhile when things kick into gear. Thanks to the show’s recent development, I’ll be keeping up with Sword Art Online II until the year comes to a close.
