Appleseed director making Starship Troopers anime film

0

Because why not?

Shinji Aramaki, director of Appleseed and Appleseed Ex Machina, will be directing an anime sequel for Starship Troopers entitled Starship Troopers: Invasion. Specifically, this will be a sequel to the lame Paul Verhoeven version, not Robert Heinlein's original novel. Flint Dile (Transformers: The Movie) is set to write the script and Appleseed Ex Machina producer Joseph Chou will produce, with the original Starship Trooper's star Casper Van Diem on board as executive producer.

It may seem like an odd choice, but Starship Troopers is no stranger to the world of anime. In 1988, Macross 7's Tetsuro Amino directed a six-episode OVA adaptation, and the novel's localized cover art supposedly had a big influence on the advancement of mecha in anime. Still, this is such a random announcement that I have to wonder who decided that this was the perfect time to bring back the property. Did anyone even watch the two direct-to-DVD sequels?

Sony says Starship Troopers: Invasion will be released in Summer 2012.
