Aw, Snap: Iconic Field shows off Eva Mecha Designer's cool artwork

Sounds like a good time

Talk about an amazing turnaround, people. After the Japan Animator Expo project hit us with a remix and a making-of video, their 21st piece, "Iconic Field," graces our eyes with Ikuto Yamashita's (the Evangelion series and Blue Submarine No. 6's Mechanical Designs) robots and character designs. All in all, the final product has an amazing old-school vibe to it, which is thanks to the futuristic armored aliens, the serious-looking character designs, and the cool robots that can pull weapons out of portals.

Even though "Iconic Field's" story would've been better as a film or OVA series, the piece worked well as a pilot/pitch animation that could be expanded upon later on. If there's one thing that I'd like for them to explore more upon, it's the heart theme that was implied in the story, along with the ruins that are connected to robots. Not only that, the robots deserve to be seen in a bigger project as well. I mean, seven minutes isn't enough to see these badass machines in action.

Just like many of the past works shown in Animator Expo, I hope that Yamashita gets the chance to go back to this concept in the future. If not, then we can at least look forward to his work in Eva 4.0 and any other stuff that he works on.
