Bandai Visual releasing a lot of Gundam Blu-rays in Japan

Even if they cost an arm and a leg, Bandai Visual has been doing a great job at getting some of its anime out on Blu-ray with excellent transfers, most notably each subsequent episode of Gundam Unicorn. It looks like the trend will continue, as the company just put out Blu-ray versions Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack and Mobile Suit Gundam F91 on June 24 for ¥6,300, or ¥7,350 for a limited edition theatrical package that includes a Blu-ray sleeve, reproduction film program, postcard, and film strip. Now fans can watch both the best Gundam movie and the worst Gundam movie in glorious high-definition; I think it's obvious which one will sell better.

The Gundam Blu-ray releases will continue on July 22 with the ∀ Gundam (Turn A Gundam) compilation movies. ∀ Gundam I: Earth Light and ∀ Gundam II: Moonlight Butterfly will sell for ¥6,300 each, or together in a limited edition package for ¥14,000. Then, there's more Blu-ray goodness on August 26. Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team: Miller's Report, a compilation movie, will be available for ¥5,250 or ¥6,300 in a limited edition package, while another compilation movie, Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Last Blitz of Zeon, is available in standard and limited edition versions for ¥6,300 and ¥7,350, respectively. Rounding out that release date is the subject of innumerable AMVs from a decade ago, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz Special Edition, yours for the price of ¥5,250, or ¥6,300 for the limited edition.

So what does this mean for you, people outside of Japan? With Gundam 00: Awakening of the Trailblazer and The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya coming out on Blu-ray in the US this summer, here's a good chance that Bandai Visual will keep bringing over its Japanese Blu-ray library, so you could be ordering your own over-priced copy later this year. Granted, a lot of these are compilation movies, and I'd slap anyone who watched an abridged version of Gundam 0083, a.k.a. the best Gundam ever, but Char's Counterattack would be totally sweet to own on Blu-ray, and Endless Waltz is always good for nostalgia and the cool mech designs. Would you grab any of these if they came to America?
