Bravely Default censorship is worse than expected

Prepare to be baffled

First Tharja, and now this -- it's as if Nintendo can't help themselves. We've known for awhile now that there were some minor alterations being made to character designs for the western release of Square-Enix's Bravely Default. The much-anticipated 3DS RPG is set for release in the US next month, but has been out in Europe since early December. What we didn't know was just how over-the-top these alterations really were.

Below is an image, courtesy of a user at IGN, who managed to compare and contrast a few of the female designs, and lo and behold, they've been "toned down." Furthermore, the age of each character has been raised from 15 to 18. Whether or not these changes were made in an attempt to appeal to recent changes in the social climate of the Western market, or if it's just Nintendo needlessly censoring things for what's perceive as the game's target demographic has yet to be determined. Given that Nintendo is the publisher in question and their recent history, the safe bet is the latter of the two.

Bravely Default hits stores in the US on February 7th, and a demo is currently available for download via the Nintendo 3DS eShop.
