Check out a Hollywood pro's ultraviolent take on Power Rangers

We goin' grim, we goin' dark!

Don't you love it when, for some trick of fate or circumstance, the idle fantasies you used to dream up when you were a dumb kid somehow come true? That's what happened for a lot of folks a couple days ago when Director Joseph Kahn and Producer Adi Shankar (who helped bring about films like The Grey and Dredd) somehow managed to rope in talents James Van der Beek (Dawson's Creek) and Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) to act...in Power Rangers.

And not just any Power Rangers. No, Dawson and Starbuck did Power/Rangers, which brings to the screen the lurid fantasy you and your mates had of making everyone's favorite pre-teen hero show into a properly mature program for adults. Of course, by "mature" and mean "for adults" I mean the concepts you had of maturity and adulthood when you were in your early teens talking with your buddies about how to make Power Rangers cool.

Naturally, Kahn and Shankar threw in a lot of violence and profanity, making even the slightly more sanitized version of the 14-minute fan film embedded above tremendously NSFW. Watch it at your own peril! Power Rangers' masters at Saban quickly forced video service Vimeo to take down an even gnarlier edition that I sadly missed. Hitflix has a great interview with Kahn about his motivations for making the film here.

Now, this is all well and good, but I'm sort of glad Kahn and co. are stuck in the realm of fan fiction for this project. This isn't the kind of maturity I want out of my tokusatsu (Kamen Rider Gaim is much closer to that ideal), to be honest. After all, I'm not 13 anymore either.
