Check out Final Fantasy VII as a 2D brawler

Final Fantasy Meets Final Fight

You cannot dispute that Final Fantasy VII is the most beloved game in the Final Fantasy series. It had a huge impact in the western market, an extended lifespan with the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, and its remaster was one of the biggest things to come out of E3 this year. Indie game developer PD Design Studio (Dusty's Revenge) have cooked up a Final Fantasy VII tribute game called Final Fantasy VII: Re-Imagined.

Taking cues from classic beat em up titles like Capcom's Dungeons and Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara and Streets of Rage the team have turned the traditional turn based RPG into a 2D side scroller. So far they have a working demo of AVALANCHE's siege on Shinra's mako reactors with playable Tifa and Cloud. I guess Barret Wallace didn't make the cut since a gun would be over-powered in a beat em up style.

The demo is available now over at their site if you have a browser with a Unity Web Player installed which is unfortunate for the Chrome users like myself. The team has expressed on their site that they don't intend to sell the finished product for profit in hopes of getting on Square Enix's good side.

KJ Poh over on twitter has a lot more information about the game including regular updates on how the animations and gameplay are progressing.
