3D goes 2D

Rejoice, otaku, for the utopia that is the 2D world is much closer than we thought. All it is is a matter of shading, if the jaw-dropping work of Gunpla builder Mumumuno is anything to go by.

The champion builder has combined an expert understanding of lighting, color blending, and shading in his custom-painted RX-78-2 model to create a Gunpla that perfectly mimics the animation of the original 1979 TV series, all the way down to the telltale cel-animation details on the joints and contours of the suit. They've even gone so far as to create custom accessories to mimic the stretched and irregular shapes of the series' special effects, like the long arc of a flashing beam saber blade

The result is a model that's hard to tell apart from a 3D rendering or physical object. Sunrise would be proud. Check out the gallery below for more awesomeness.
