Crunchyroll licensing Shinkai's 5cm per second! Buy it!

Makoto Shinkai's an anime auteur easily on par with the likes of Miyazaki and Oshii. His works are a bright spot of complexity and depth in an industry that many perceive to be in creative downfall, soon to be drowned in a sea of moe, GAR and pandering frivolity. And whatever your opinion on that particular issue, Shinkai - the man behind Voices of a Distant Star, 5 Centimeters Per Second, and The Place Promised in Our Early Days - remains a creator of singular ability. In fact, we placed his works at #3 in our list of the best anime of the decade.

I've gushed enough high praise for now, so let's move on to the actual announcement. Crunchyroll has licensed 5 Centimeters Per Second for release on DVD in North America. That's right, they're getting into DVD releases now. Bandai Entertainment will be handling the actual packaging and distribution, though, so it's not a solo affair. The film should ship with the dub by Bang Zoom! Entertainment.

Now, you might recall that 5 Centimeters Per Second had already been licensed before. Unfortunately, the license-holder for that particular period were ADV, who have sadly passed on. So this is pretty much a second chance for people who haven't seen it yet. And you should.

A hard date hasn't been set yet, but you should expect a release in late September or early October. Folks in the San Francisco Bay Area in a moviegoing frame of mind can partake of a September 14th screening at San Francisco's VIZ Cinema theater.

Sadly though, no announcement was made yet as to the film's potential for a Blu-ray release. I'd really put down for that. Get on it, Crunchyroll!
