Disgaea 4's cameo appearances are amazing

0

Yes, your eyes are not lying. That's Index in the header image, and this isn't a screenshot from the upcoming Index fighting game, either. Instead, it's a screenshot from Nippon Ichi's next Disgaea game, Disgaea 4

As you squeal in glee, know that the reason Index in all of her lovely nun gear is present is thanks to Nippon Ichi's weird, friendly relationship with manga/book publisher Dengeki Bunko, the imprint under which the A Certain Magical Index light novels are published, along with the likes of ToraDora! and Spice and Wolf.

Everyone's favorite magical nun pops up when the player casts "Omega Heal". Spice and Wolf's apple-coveting goddess Holo shows up when you cast "Omega Wind", and when one casts "Omega Fire", the world is subject to Anime Tenchou, the hot-blooded shopkeeper from Lucky Star (check him out below). "Omega Star" summons an appearance by, of all things, Super Zeus from the obscure Bikkuriman sticker lineup.

Now, this isn't the first time Nippon Ichi has pulled some shameless cameo action. ZHP: Unlosing Ranger vs. Deathdark Evilman featured appearances by ToraDora!'s Taiga, as well as Shana and Holo once more. Games by Nippon Ichi's buddy studios like Imageepoch, Gust and Idea Factory regularly cameo Prinnies, as well.

This is why I love Japanese product placement. Instead of stupid billboards or immersion-breaking ads shoehorned as in western games, Japanese games lovingly integrate the products into the very fabric of their games' being. Just look at the Yakuza series! Or this!

Now that you know all of this, what kinds of cameos are you hoping to see? Me, I hope casting something like "Omega Shadow" will summon Durarara!!'s Celty. Dengeki Bunko also owns that series, you know.
