Don't forget about this year's Makoto Shinkai Day

Catch all of Shinkai's works on Crunchyroll while you can

Spring is almost here, and do you know what that means? You might say "the weather is warming up," but here in New York we still have snow on the forecast for Monday, so uh, NO. It is not necessarily warming up all that much. But it is time for that other harbinger of nature's rebirth, Crunchyroll's Makoto Shinkai Day.

If you're unfamiliar with the concept, Crunchyroll has been making the works of respected anime auteur Shinkai available for free streaming for a couple of days every year for several years now. This year's Global Shinkai Day (more like Global Shinkai Weekend, actually), runs through Monday, March 17 at 9 p.m. EST. You can use this opportunity to take in some of Shinkai's most celebrated works like Voices from a Distant Star, 5 Centimeters Per Second, and Children Who Chase Lost Voices. No spoilers, but um, let's just say having a tissue box handy might not be a bad idea.

Back when Shinkai Day first started, it was a bit iffy if this virtual film festival would be available in your country/territory, but fortunately, this year all of these films are available worldwide...except for Japan, of course. Oh, the irony. Meanwhile, the good folks over at Crunchy La Roll are also having a contest where you can win hard copies of Shinkai's films by taking photos of yourself inspired by his works, so head on over to the contest details on Crunchyroll if that sounds like something you'd be interested in. I could take a picture of myself passed out on the floor after weeping for several hours Re: Voices of a Distant Star, but somehow I doubt that would win me any swag. Maybe you can do better?
