Dragon Quest X gets a release date for Japan

Oh Dragon Quest. While I wasn't introduced to the series until VIII, I've since been going back and enjoying the DS remakes of past entries. This franchise is exceedingly traditional and as a result possesses a certain charm that other RPG series lack. The last numbered game, IX, changed things up but kept most of the DQ trappings intact. My biggest issue with the game was the lack of a real cast of characters. I'm completely fine with having a silent main character because most of the time the supporting cast helps shape the MC. In IX's case however, your entire party was composed of custom characters. I admittedly had a hard time getting past this and had hoped that the next game would fix that. Unfortunately with Dragon Quest X being an MMORPG, I've lost all hope.

Square Enix has revealed that they'll be launching Dragon Quest X for the Wii on August 2 of this year. It'll be a full blown retail MMORPG with a subscription fee and no offline single player mode. It'll be hitting the Wii-U something later, though I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be a launch title.

While I don't expect the Wii version to hit western shores, I'd be surprised if Square Enix also skipped over the Wii-U entry.

Hopefully they drop the monthly subscription fee when it eventually goes west.
