Drakengard 3 gets a NA release date and CE

Never forget Shinjuku

Square Enix's Drakengard/Nier series is weird.

The first two games are gameplay messes that made me want to toss my controller out of a window. Nier is much better in that regard, as it's a functional video game that's even occasionally fun to play.

The reality is that nobody approaches these games looking to experience the best in action RPG gameplay. No, people enjoy this series because they have extremely messed up, well written stories with lovable characters. People die for awful reasons, relationships are all kinds of crazy, and they typically have soul crushing endings. In some ways I think the experience is comparable to something like Deadly Premonition: the gameplay isn't the main attraction.

I've played a great deal of the latest game in the series, Drakengard 3. It's far more playable than 1 and 2, but it has many a technical problem. That being said, it's very well written, surprisingly funny, and super engrossing. The music is equally as fantastic too. I can't begin to describe how happy I am that it got made against all odds.

North America has finally received a release date for Drakengard 3, and it isn't too far off. It'll be available for purchase on May 20 of this year in two separate flavors. The regular version will go for $49.99, and the Square Enix Online Store exclusive Collector's Edition will be yours for $79.99. The latter will include the Complete Novella from the JP release, an Official Soundtrack CD Sampler, Prequel Stage DLC, costume DLC in the form of Caim's outfit from the first Drakengard, Giant Baby Hat DLC, and a poster. If that sounds like something you want, be sure to place your preorder now.

Additionally, Square Enix has a three tiered preorder system set up for the normal version of Drakengard 3. Preorder the game between today and March 3 and you'll receive the Japanese voiceover DLC, as well as two additional bonuses that have yet to be revealed. Preorder the game from March 4 to April 8 and you'll get the two unannounced bonuses. Finally, preorder from April 9 to launch day and you'll only get the final bonus. If you know you definitely want a copy of the game, I say preorder ASAP.

I've included some screenshots and photos of the CE from Square Enix's press release in the gallery, so be sure to check those out.
