Featured Fan Art: MightyOtaking

0

Behold: the rebirth of the Featured Fan Art column! Tune in every week as we profile the work of some of the fandom's best creative talent. If you have an artist you think deserves recognition, let us know by emailing our tip line. Just put "Featured Fan Art" in the subject line.

Jon is an idiot, by the way.

HEY! I HEARD THAT!

Dammit.

Hmph. Anyway, this week's artist is MightyOtaking (aka Paul Johnson), the virtual embodiment of old-school anime aesthetic. You might remember him as the guy behind the controversial fansub documentary and the Doctor Who anime. He's also known for his unique art style and tongue-in-cheek humour. He hails from jolly ol' England, loves Invader Zim and is utterly obsessed with Daleks.

On his profile, Otaking lists his favorite movie as Macross: Do You Remember Love, and his artwork certainly corroborates this claim. He has a special talent for drawing intricately detailed mechanical backgrounds, as well as machines, robots and fighter jets. Unfortunately, his human character designs aren't quite as inspired, and their poses sometimes look unnatural and clunky. He does, however, use an old-school aesthetic that I absolutely adore. Just looking at his bikini-sporting Dalek girl brings up wonderfully nostalgic memories of Dirty Pair and other retro sci-fi classics. I'll take a spikey-haired scantily-clad action girl over K-On!'s moeblobs any day.

I've included a sampling of Otaking's work in the gallery below. If you like what you see, head on over to his deviantART and Youtube pages for more. And remember... Daleks are superior!

EXTERMINATE!
