Final Fusion: Happy 20th Anniversary, King of the Braves GaoGaiGar

Celebration Approved!

A new month has started, and things are starting to get golden around here. Today marks the 20th anniversary of King of the Braves GaoGaiGar, which aired on  Feb. 1, 1997. The show was the final installment in Sunrise and Takara's (Transformer's Japanese toyline) Brave super robot anime franchise, with the last title being the only one that crossed the pond.

When I first watched the series, the thing that pulled me in was how it was a mix of SupermanVoltron/Go Lion and Transformers. Combined with the show's transition into an emotional piece during its major segments, GaoGaiGar turned out to be a grand glorious combination of stuff that made super robot anime shows a blast.

Aside from myself, the series touched many of Japanator current and former staff members, such as Japanator Founder and Former Editor in Chief Brad Rice. Even though the GaoGaiGar's audience was meant to be younger viewers, this didn't stop the series from getting people energized while bringing them to tears. In a way, it was the type of show that would please to your inner childhood and your current self as you watch the people at the organization GGG (Gutsy Geoid Guard) use their guts and courage to protect everyone from danger.

As a way to commemorate the show's 20th anniversary, I gathered up some fan art of the series from 2016 and 2017. Most importantly, you can find the list of the pieces' artists below. For the sake of celebrating the whole series, I included stuff from its sequel GaoGaiGar Final, along with the show's catchy opening for the original series and the Grand Glorious Gathering version of its successor.
