Finally: Japan simulates the lap-pillow in VR

How long 'til a picking-your-ear mode?

If Japan and tech-savvy otaku continue to apply their peculiar brand of innovation to the latest tech, we may get the 2D-loving world we've always dreamed of sooner rather than later. The latest blow against the tyranny of 3D employs the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset and...a pillow.

Developer Up Frontier have combined Oculus' chunky headgear with a chunky pillow to turn that pillow into a cute anime girl's lap, emulating the classic romantic cliche of resting your head in your loved one's lap, or "hizamakura". In the program, users can rest their heads on a special lap-shaped pillow (in stores now!) and look up at the headset to see the smiling face of Unity-chan, a CG girl who giggles and croons affectionately.

Unfortunately, Unity-chan doesn't take kindly to lovers who don't stay still. Fidget too much or leave her lap too soon and she'll punish you with a roundhouse kick. It seems that otaku VR may not only pioneer virtual lap-pillows, but also virtual tsundere abuse.
