First Impressions: Kaichou wa Maid-sama

Summary: Middle of the road shoujo fare that's probably nothing more than a promotional tool for the manga.

I'll admit: I fall pretty easily for shoujo material. Stuff like Lovely Complex or Crimson Hero? I drink that milkshake. I drink it all up. Some of the tropes and storylines just don't work for me, though, and I quickly find myself bored to tears. Kaichou wa Maid-sama stands squarely between the two, and I must admit, it's frustrating.

Naturally, I've got the lowdown on this show after the jump. Won't you please join me for this First Impression, master?

Misaki Ayuzawa is the student council president, a position that apparently inspires fear and has the student doing more work than a principal, at Seika High. She's aggressive and fiercely defensive of the female populace, since the school is 80% male, on account of it being an all-boys school until recently.

Of course, Ayuzawa has a secret. She works a part-time job at a maid cafe, like any self-respecting girl would do. Of course, no one can know that the student council president is doing something so salacious as serving guys moe moe omelets.

And, what do you know? The pretty boy who always just blows off whatever she says finds out. And he starts attending the cafe regularly. This stress, plus trying to deal with studies and her family's finances causes her to overwork herself. I think you can guess who comes to the rescue when she faints.

OH MY~ (Do your best George Takei impersonation)

Now, these two seem to have bonded over her little secret, although we'll have to wait and watch the rest of the series to see how this turns into a romance, undoubtedly.

I'm not against plots that are easily telegraphed (see Ladies vs. Butlers!), but there's something in the back of my mind that's saying this is going to be so predictable it will hamper the fun of watching the show. The art style isn't one to save it, as J.C. Staff's design is fairly middle of the road on this.

I'll keep watching the show for now, but I can't really recommend it as anything that's especially worth your while. Who knows, there may be some great plot twist a few more episodes in, and Ayuzawa gets TEEN PREGNANT. You'll have to keep your eyes peeled to Annotated Anime to find out!
