First look at Attack on Titan in English

Take your dubbing like a man

To build excitement for the official premiere of the Attack on Titan dub at Anime Boston -- and to tear the geekier portions of the internet asunder with talk over whether certain voices are "too deep" or "just deep enough," -- Funimation has started posting clips of the show's English adaptation on Youtube. So far they've posted three clips that give us a chance to hear Jean, Sasha, Levi, and several others, but no Mikasa or Eren yet. I'm betting we'll get at least one more clip featuring the two leads once they finally announce Eren's voice actor, whoever it may be. Frankly, after this amount of build-up, I can only hope that Eren will be played by none other than Sir Ian McKellen.

Okay seriously, now that we have our first look at the dub, I'm feeling pretty good about how it's shaping up. Even from these short clips, it sounds like the actors are 100% invested in their roles, avoiding that occasional dub problem (which, sadly, still persists even today) where the actors sound like they're reading their lines from a script they just got ten minutes ago. They've changed out the phrase "3D Maneuver Gear" for "Omni-Directional Mobility Gear," which is a mouthful, but probably more accurate. And Ashly Burch as Potato Girl can whoop like nobody's business. I remember her from her early Hey Ash Whatcha Playin' days when she was still just a kid, so it's nice to see her getting a fairly high-profile role.

What do you guys think? Many users on Funimation's Youtube channel seem to think that Levi (Matthew Mercer) is copping too much attitude and sounds too masculine, but I'm okay with it; I think trying to capture the same amount of ironic detachment Hiroshi Kamiya used for the character would be a tall order. As it stands, he sounds kind of above it all and like he doesn't care all that much, which is close enough for me.

Wait, did I say that Sir Ian McKellen was my pick for Eren Jaeger? I take it back; I want a slightly inebriated Russell Crowe. That would elevate this thing to a whole new level.

Hi, I'm a former newspaper journalist who got tired of having a front row seat to the death of print. There probably could be some interesting story there about a disenchanted reporter moving on ... more + disclosures
