Free Dragon Quest for your smartphone

0

Free video games!

The Dragon Quest Portal App came out last week and seems to be the source for DQ games and DQ information. To celebrate, the first million downloads of Dragon Quest were free. If you missed the boat, worry not! The original Dragon Quest (well, in an updated form) will be free until Tuesday, December 10. Yes, it requires a Japanese iTunes account (Or your Android equivalent. Forgive me. I’m that Apple guy.) and the game is entirely in Japanese, but hey - free!

I played it to completion over the weekend and liked it a lot. There have been some complaints about the graphics looking stretched or just plain bad. Not only did I not mind them, I found the interface to be well done and so suited to a smartphone. The menus have nice big buttons which meant I never hit something I did not want to. I cannot say that about most RPGs I have played on my phone. There is some built in logic for moving around that makes dealing with the touch-screen directional pad nowhere near as annoying as it usually is. Other than that it is pure Dragon Quest. No In App Purchases, no Stamina meters. Nothing but dragons and quests.

If you have the means, I’d check it out. Dragon Quest is still a fun, quick game these days. You could do a lot worse even for free.
