Full Metal Panic spinoff work begins this summer

The dust jackets on Full Metal Panic! Sigma volumes have announced that a Full Metal Panic! spinoff is in the works, and will begin this summer, and will coincide with the publishing of previously released FMP! short stories. The interesting thing about this spinoff is that unlike so many spinoffs that simply go the route of a random tangent, this spinoff will simply be set ten years after the original novel series.

The project is being supervised by the original author, Shoji Gatoh, but will actually be written by Naoto Oguro. Shikidouji is going to illustrate and Kanetake Ebikawa will "contribute to mechanical designs." While this is all well and good for Japanese fans of the series, I don't know how this will fare for Western fans, as the title was original published by Tokyopop, which has announced that they are closing their North America distribution.

Are any fans interested in this spinoff title? I hope that the lack of distribution by Tokyopop will not encourage too much in the way of pirating and fan translations to get a copy.
