FUNimation changes Sankarea replacement to recall

FUNi and your retailer will work it out

Not too long ago FUNimation posted a public service announcement regarding their release of Sankarea. The teenage zombie romantic comedy featured a gruesome scene with Rea, who gets, well, turned into a zombie from a nasty fall. There were also some casual bath scenes with fog or things in the way in the TV broadcast.

The root cause of the snafu has to do with how the R1 home video release used the Japanese TV master, censoring included. Despite FUNi's attempt to make things right and release a uncensored version based on the original home video master video, it turns out that would change the content rating of Sankarea to TV-MA from TV-14.

The rating change means that FUNimation can no longer directly replace the versions early buyers received, presumably for legal reasons. Instead, retailers would refund such purchases as FUNi is recalling the censored copies. On the bright side, at least one retailer has gone beyond that and will simply send you the new version for free when it comes out. According to RightStuf.com, the new, uncensored version of Sankarea will be available early 2014, and the folks at RightStuf will ship their customers of Sankarea a copy of the new uncensored version when available, at no additional cost. Other RightStuf customers will receive specific instructions in order to deal with either an existing but unfilled preorder or other related issues.

Anyone got hit by this bait-and-switch? How has your retailer taken cared the situation for you?
